Deep learning is an artificial intelligence technology that enables computer vision, speech recognition in mobile phones, machine translation, AI games, driverless cars, and other applications. When we use consumer products from Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Apple, or Baidu, we are often interacting with a deep learning system. In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, computer scientist John Kelleher offers an accessible and concise but comprehensive introduction to the fundamental technology at the heart of the artificial intelligence revolution. Kelleher explains that deep learning enables data-driven decisions by identifying and extracting patterns from large datasets; its ability to learn from complex data makes deep learning ideally suited to take advantage of the rapid growth in big data and computational power. Kelleher also explains some of the basic concepts in deep learning, presents a history of advances in the field, and discusses the current state of the art.

Panos Louridas is Associate Professor in the Department of Management Science and Technology at the Athens University of Economics and Business. He is the author of Real World Algorithms: A Beginner's Guide (MIT Press). We like putting labels on time periods, perhaps because affixing a tab on time allows us to get a grip on its fluidity. We have therefore started speaking of the present as the dawning of a new algorithmic age, in which algorithms will reign supreme, and will govern larger and larger parts of our lives. It is interesting that we are not talking about the computer age or internet age anymore.

This book is an introductory overview of Ethem's detailed text on ML. The text itself has gotten mostly mixed or bad reviews due to a lot of math and algorithms notated without a lot of detailed explanations, however, this is a general reader intro and doesn't go into math, algos in detail, trees, Bayesian logic or even pseudocode, it is more an up to date overview of the field as it exists at this writing. Alpaydin's expensive text, btw, is also available in a very inexpensive Asian edition here on Amazon if you want to brave that difficult book without a lot of investment (Introduction To Machine Learning 3Rd Edition). The present volume is sortof a "ML for Dummies" only updated for the current craze with big data management. There is a lot of history and background that an experienced ML person will find too basic, but as a High School intro or general interested reader intro it is excellent.
